Environmental Science Department Conception

The conception of specialization “Ecology” is based on the necessity to provide sustainable development under the conditions of making Ukrainian sovereign country, which transits into the new model of social and economic system, necessity of stopping the ecological crisis. This can be realized with the help of high-educated experts in different branches of science and in the field of ecology, too. In the conditions of global ecological crisis department of ecology tries to develop specialization “Ecology” using the experience of leading universities of Western Europe and America. New approaches of study environmental science are based on the international practice of economic education of Bachelors and Master’s degrees.
That is why department is aimed to provide two-leveled high ecological education of Bachelors and Master’s degrees with the possibility to continue education and take a doctoral degree in NaUKMA or in the leading western centers of higher education.
University education on the Bachelor’s (Undergraduate) level is foreseen in the branch of Natural and Social Sciences: Ecology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economy, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, and Information Science. Big attention is paid for study foreign languages.
Efforts are concentrated on study basics of Ecology as a fundamental science with stressed necessity of knowledge about unity and indissoluble connections of man and nature, about the main effects of an influence of a man on the environment.
University education on the Master's degree (Graduate) level is provided deep knowledge in basic branches of Environmental Science. This is necessary condition for the future professional qualities of a Master’s degree. That is why foundation for two directions is formed:

• Environmental Science;
• Environmental Policy.

Taking into the account the financial possibilities of NaUKMA the biggest attention is paid for the second direction. It is supposed to study Environmental Policy, Environmental Economy, Environmental Law, Environmental Ethics and Psychology.
Perspectives of this direction are the solving of such necessary for our country problems as management of resources and water resources, of recreational tourists’ complex. Great attention is paid for connection of these problems with methodology of applied mathematics and technology of geographic information systems.
Master’s degree courses of environmental science and policy is directed on the preparation of professionals with all knowledge and skills, which are needed in the conditions of modern dynamic economy.
After completing of Master’s program and defense of master’s degree thesis graduate has a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Policy.
Department of ecology realizes the conception of environmental education using the unique possibilities in NaUKMA. We have ties with departments of sociology, economic theory, and political science. Preparation of common lectures, changes of programs, organization of scientific and methodological conferences are made here.
Department of ecology develops contacts with secondary schools and Small Academy of Sciences in Ukraine and chooses talented children for their forward education in NaUKMA.
Department also has contacts with leading scientific and educational centers in the world. Foreign professors are invited to give their lectures (Northern London University, Open University in Berlin, Riga University, Moscow University etc.). Lecturers of the department work on probation in other countries (Germany, Great Britain, United States of America, Czechoslovakia etc.). Department has scientific contacts with leading centers (Amsterdam University Environmental Center), funds (fund “Renaissance”)
Graduates of the program are future analytics, researchers and lecturers. They also can be future leaders of governmental and non-governmental structures in Ukraine.
The main perspectives of the development of the direction to prepare professionals in ecology are:

• Preparation of high qualified professionals in ecology on the levels of Bachelors and Master’s degrees;
• Paying great attention on the preparation of professionals with knowledge of natural sciences and systematical knowledge in economics, law and management;
• Invitation of the leading scientists of Ukraine and other countries to lecture in NaUKMA;
• Planning the work of making the best graduates of master’s degree program to lecture;
• Paying attention for elaborating new courses by the prominent scientific researchers which collaborates with the department.
