Faculty History and Structure
The present day Faculty of Social Sciences and Social Technologies is made of six Departments, which are the Departments of Sociology, Volodymyr Poltavets School of Social Work, Department of PR Studies, Psychology and Pedagogics, Department of Political Science (transferred from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2002), Kyiv-Mohyla School of Journalism, and School of Public Health. The Faculty offers Bachelor’s Degrees in Political Science, Comparative Politics, Social Work, and Sociology; andMaster’s Degreesin Journalism, Public Health Administration, Political Studies (with specialization in European Studies, European and German Studies, Civilization and Sociocultural Bases of Politics), Social Work, and Sociology.
Faculty Peculiarities
NaUKMA Department of Political Science is one of the leading political schools in Ukraine. Department became a co-founder of two research institutions - School of Political Analytics and the Institute for Civic Education - whose highly qualified staff is in a high demand and is regularly sought as political advisors and consultants.
Department of Sociology Bachelor and Master level programs are designed as an integral unity of courses in history and theory of sociology, critical social understanding, practical social research methods, and techniques of social enquiry.
Kyiv International Institute of Sociology - first non-state research institution in Ukraine - functions in a close cooperation with the NaUKMA Department of Sociology. This fact provides the Sociology majoring graduate and postgraduate students with the chance to have access the unique sociological data bases, which reflect the characteristics of the adult population of Ukraine starting from the year 1991. These data enable the Department researches and students to apply nonprobability and probability sampling methods for different kinds of sociological research. At the same time, interviews and focus-groups being conducted for the educational and research purposes in the specially equipped studios develop the student's skills in the techniques of the survey and questionnaire design, interviewing, interpretation of the results obtained.
Volodymyr Poltavets School of Social Work is the first professional school of this kind in Ukraine, created in 1995 firstly for Master level education for the social and health service workers. Recently the School was granted a membership in the European Association of the Schools of Social Work.
Studying Opportunities
Political Studies students are benefiting most from studying with the supervision of the highly qualified local and international visiting faculty, among which are Fulbright professors, faculty members of the Department partner institutions, such as Stanford University (USA), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University (Poland), Edinburgh University (Great Britain), Central European University (Hungary) and others. They also benefit from the stream of national and international politicians, civil servants who visit NaUKMA to speak at lectures, which are usually open for the whole NaUKMA community.
Political Science students play an important role in the Department's contribution to scholarship through the research they undertake at the School of Political Analytics and the Institute for Civic Education. It is a good application of theoretical knowledge got in the classrooms and a preparation both for further research work - for those planning to become scholars in political science - and for practical activities as policy-makers, expert civil servants, political consultants, and political journalists.
All the NaUKMA students can get a minor or complete a certificate program in Theory and Methods of Public Relations, which is offered by the Department of Public Relations Studies
Among the newest courses being introduced into the curricula of the practically oriented Social Work programs are: Social Planning, Comparative Social Politics, Community Work and Public Administration, Social Work with Women Affected by Domestic Violence.
Out-of-class Options
The program in Social Work stresses the importance of practical preparation and familiarity with the best international experiences in social work. Each student of the Master Program is Social Work conducts a practical research project, mostly in collaboration and on the basis of the partner social work centres and agencies, hospitals, orphan houses. Research conclusions and recommendation very often present a comprehensive analysis of the organization's functioning and activity therefore can be used both for its functional improvements and new projects implementation. Usually the research results also become a basis for publications in different research collections and scientific journals.
