History and Structure
The Faculty started functioning in 1992, when the first students were enrolled to the Department of Biology. In 1994, the Department of Physics and Mathematics was created, in 1995 - the Department of Ecology, and finally, in 2000 - the Department of Chemistry. The Faculty offers Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Ecology, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development; and Master’s Degrees in Biology, Chemistry (Membrane and Sorption Processes and Technologies), Physics, and Environmental Science, Ecology and Sustainable Development.
Faculty Peculiarities
During their first two years all the Natural Science majoring students acquire fundamental preparation in Biology, Ecology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Computer Science. At the same time a strong necessity for Natural Science specialists to have a broad understanding of social implications of the discoveries in any of these fields, as well as political, economic and also moral effects of the human actions on the environment is emphasized. For this reason the Natural Sciences students are required to choose certain amount of courses in humanities and social sciences.
Department of Biology offers its students a comprehensive preparation in Biology as well as modern approaches to the field, combining it with the overview of the relating disciplines (e.g. chemistry, physics, and mathematics). Putting a strong emphasis on the students' involvement into the research Department actively cooperates with Experimental Botanic Institute (Czech Republic) and many Ukrainian research institutions, among which Research Institutes of Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, and the Institute of Gene Engineering.
Department of Physics and Mathematics' 5-year Specialist's program in Physics has two streams: in General Physics and in Physics of Biological Systems. Both streams offers profound preparation in Mathematics, 2-level studies of Physics (General Physics with the emphasis on Phenomenological Aspects and the level of Theoretical Physics), and experimental methods of modern Biophysics. Advanced students can apply basic knowledge and concentrate on a narrower subfield (e.g. Physics of Biological Systems, Molecular Biophysics).
Department of Ecology provides a general education in natural and social sciences, while providing opportunities for interdisciplinary analysis of environmental issues. Understanding Ecology as a study of interactions between a human and natures and as a field that combines and integrates various disciplines, the Department offers its students two main streams, which are Environmental Science and Environmental Politics. Department established successful contacts with leading world scientific and educational centers in the field , which are the Center of Ecology at Amsterdam University (Netherlands), Idaho State University, South Alabama University (USA).
NaUKMA Department of Ecology students have a possibility to take an UNDP-supported distance course in Public and Private Sectors Partnership for Environmental Problems Solutions, which was created by the Department in cooperation with Yale University (USA) and 15 other universities around the globe.
The Faculty has cooperation agreements with most of the natural science research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Academy of Medical Sciences, where a number of the labs and fieldworks are being conducted.
In 2008, the Department of Environmental Studies created a joint educational research complex with the Institute of Botany to study issues related to ecosystems, biodiversity and sustainable development.
