Faculty History and Structure
The Faculty of Humanities was created shortly after the Academy's revival in 1992. Then it consisted of the Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, Ukrainian Language, English Language, and the Department of Foreign Languages. In 1994, the Departments of History, Comparative Literature and Physical Training, and in 1997 - the Department of Political Studies were organized. The same year the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Foreign Languages were united into the single Department of Philology. During the years 1997-2002 the Faculty bore the name 'Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences'. The present day Faculty of Humanities is made of five Departments, which are the Departments of Cultural Studies, History, Philology, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and the Department of Ukrainian Language. The Faculty offers degrees in History (Bachelor and Master levels), Cultural Studies (Bachelor and Master levels), Philology (Bachelor and Master levels) and Philosophy (Bachelor and Master levels) and Archaeology and Ancient History of Ukraine (Master level).
Faculty Peculiarities
Students majoring in humanities are getting profound preparation not only in their particular field of specialization; they are being offered a solid and broad training in the sphere of arts and humanities.
The Faculty offers a wide spectrum of foreign languages (besides English which a NaUKMA first foreign and also along with Ukrainian is a University working language); among the languages for students to chose are both ancient (Latin, Old Slavonic) and modern ones - European (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Finnish, Polish, Croatian and others), Oriental (Arabic, Japanese) and others. Training in the second foreign language is available for the students of all the NaUKMA specializations.
The annual prize established by Roman Struts, Professor of the University of Calgary (Canada) is awarded each year for the best year paper and Bachelor / Master Thesis in philology. The candidates are approved by the NaUKMA Department of Philology.
Affiliated institutions that contribute to the Faculty educational process and to its research activities are: Spadschyna KMA (KMA Heritage) Research Center, History of East-Central Europe Research Center, European Humanities Research Center, NaUKMA Archeological Expedition, Ukrainian-Polish Center of Culture and Scholarship.
Faculty of Humanities actively cooperates with the research institutions in Ukraine, as well as having bilateral agreements and projects with a number of foreign partners (among which are Lublin, Poznan, Warsaw, and Dresden Universities).
Studying Opportunities
Faculty offers both major (in History, Cultural studies, Philology and Philosophy) and minor (in History, Cultural Studies, Philology and Philosophy) specializations, as well as short certificate programs (in Religious Studies, Art of Translation, and Judaism Studies). The last two options are available for the students of all the NaUKMA specializations.
Faculty of Humanities Bachelor's and Master's program curriculums are of the original character; they usually have an interdisciplinary character and combine state-of-the-art cultural studies, philosophy, religious studies, history, philology, archaeology, cultural and social anthropology.
Students are offered different kinds of fieldworks, internships and practical trainings, among which are archeological, archeological-cultural, ethnographical, pedagogical, museum etc.
Out-of-class Options
Faculty initiates and patronizes different art studios, which area available for all the NaUKMA students, faculty and administrations.
The Faculty organizes visiting lectures and meetings with the famous Ukrainian and international writers, artists, public and political figures.
