The NaUKMA Graduate School (Master's Programs), which launched in 1996, is now one of the leading centres of academic scholarship in Ukraine with its fundamental mission to offer students quality of advanced education, wide range of subjects to master together with the possibility to specialize profoundly in particular field, complemented with strong emphasis and access to the research work.
The NaUKMA Graduate School became the first and remains the only independently functioning graduate school in Ukraine. It offers excellent opportunities to those who already have their first degree to develop in the field selected during the undergraduate (Bachelor of Specialist) studies. Altogether, the School also considers attentively applications of those who would like to change their track of specialization for their Master level studies in comparison with undergraduate major.
NaUKMA Graduate School is widely known for its unique democratic atmosphere. Famous for its rich and rewarding scholarship setting, it has become a real magnet for a wide range of students from the whole Ukraine and neighbouring countries (ADMISSION IS OPEN FOR ALL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES, BUT NOT ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE NaUKMA FIRST DEGREE HOLDERS), and also for leading teaching and faculty staff.
The percentage of the NaUKMA Master Degree holders, who are being admitted for Doctoral programs to the world leading schools, is among the highest in Ukraine.
Types of Programs The NaUKMA confers a wide range of Master’s degrees. Most of them are 2 year (1 year and 10 months) full-time study programs, which comprise lecture and seminar classes, practical work (internships), followed by the writing and defence of a thesis or dissertation. Usually to qualify for graduation a student has to master minimum 60 and maximum 75 NaUKMA credits. Along there are few Master programs lasting one year (Master Program in Law) and one year and a half (Master's Program in Public Health and Master's Program in Business Administration) .
Types of Courses Headed by the leading specialists in their fields, each program has its peculiarities in the way the curriculum is being organized. However, all the programs are following the same organizational pattern when mandatory courses are accompanied by the wide choice of electives. Usually NaUKMA courses are term long, though sometimes they can be arranged in intensive mode (especially those taught by the visiting faculty). Some Master's programs are using either a modular system (please check Master Program in Economic Theory), unit system (please check Master Program in Public Health) , or modular and evening & week-end form of studies (Executive Master Program in Business Administration). In addition to the specialization in their Master track, students can register for a free blocks of courses called certificate programs, e.g. Professional Translation, Applied Psychology, which provides them with additional sets of knowledge and skills.
Types of Classes Master's degree programs usually include, first of all, tutorials, which is a combination of lecture and seminar classes, with a strong emphasis on the independent work. In this case, by the end of lecture and seminar period students are expected to submit one or two course papers, and then a final exam (test) is being arranged. Consequently, course assessment is based on class participation results, exam or test results, and course paper results, or a combination of these; check here to look at the NaUKMA grading system. Practical training is also part of most of the Master’s programs (during their practical training, students are expected to perform some assignments or practical tasks rather than to work on theory). In some programs, like Environmental Science or Archaeology and Ancient History, students are undertaking fieldworks (examining their objects in the “field” or in the “natural environment”, applying their theoretical knowledge for the practical work or, visa versa, gathering data for the future analysis). Nevertheless, the central part of every Master’s program curriculum is the Master's Thesis or Diploma Paper; students are expected to defend theses to sum up their studies.
Language of Instruction
Most of the NaUKMA Master’s Programs have both Ukrainian and English as languages of instruction, meaning that some courses are being taught is Ukrainian and some in English. Therefore, a working knowledge of both languages is required for those who would like to qualify for the degree. At the same time, international exchange and visiting students who do not aspire to receive academic degree or diploma from NaUKMA and are not bound by any requirements of the local Master's degree programs can choose only English language courses.
